To dig, to excavate, to examine, to determine and to recontextualize. This project, much like archaeology, concerns itself with reconstruction. However, unlike archaeologists, I focus exclusively on specific, incomplete artifacts.
I attempt to complete these by utilizing what we do know; the archaeological metadata provided by Collectie Nederland. Using a typewriter to fill in the missing parts, I try to give the most complete picture.
Some finds end up more complete than others, and some don’t need all their data to be completed. The designer, as archaeologist, can only do so much.
In the installation, visitors are encouraged to excavate objects, in the form of RISO prints. These prints are presented in sedimentary layers, on sober materials. The act of depleting the objects, mirrors the slow emptying of the Dutch archaeological landscape.
